Job Summary
TEGEM is seeking a detail-oriented and motivated Accounts Assistant to support day-to-day financial operations at its Head Office in Tororo. This position is ideal for a competent junior finance professional with hands-on experience in NGO accounting, strong proficiency in QuickBooks, and a solid understanding of donor-funded financial management. The role requires accuracy, integrity, and the ability to work within established financial controls.
Key Responsibilities
The Accounts Assistant will:
- Record all financial transactions accurately in QuickBooks, ensuring correct project, budget line, and donor coding
- Prepare and review payment vouchers, petty cash transactions, and bank payment documentation in line with internal controls
- Support monthly bank and cash reconciliations and promptly resolve variances
- Assist in budget monitoring, expenditure tracking, and preparation of monthly financial summaries
- Maintain complete and well-organized financial files to support internal and external audits
- Verify procurement and payment documentation for completeness and compliance
- Support audit processes by preparing schedules, ledgers, and supporting documentation
- Ensure adherence to TEGEM financial policies, donor rules, and statutory requirements
- Perform other finance duties as assigned
Required Qualifications and Skills
- Minimum of a Diploma in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration (Accounting option), or a related field
- At least 2–3 years of relevant work experience in accounting or finance, preferably within an NGO or donor-funded organization
- Demonstrated hands-on experience using QuickBooks for NGO accounting (this is mandatory)
- Sound knowledge of basic accounting principles, budgeting, and financial controls. Working knowledge of NGO internal controls, audit trails, and project-based accounting
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and other MS Office applications
- High level of accuracy, attention to detail, and strong numerical skills
- Good written and verbal communication skills in English
