Brief Background

From a community response to a registered NGO

Tekere Girl Child Empowerment (TEGEM) is a non-profit organization, a women and girls-centred initiative dedicated to empowering girls to realize their full potential. What began in 2004 as a community-based organisation evolved into a fully registered NGO in 2019.

At TEGEM, we believe that when a girl is empowered, the entire community thrives. Our work focuses on providing access to accurate information, life skills, and positive behavior change around Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) and Family Planning — helping girls stay in school and build brighter futures.
